Japan Commits $17.7m for Major Upgrade of Fua’amotu International Airport
Nukuʻalofa – Tonga’s Fua’amotu International Airport will undergo a major upgrade under a grant agreement signed today between the Governments of Japan and Tonga.
The agreement, formalised by Ambassador of Japan to Tonga H.E. Mr. Inagaki Hisao and Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ʻAisake Valu Eke, provides 2.549 billion yen (USD 17.7 million) in grant aid.
The project will expand and refurbish the international terminal building, extend the apron, and introduce passenger boarding bridges with connected passageways. It will also modernise essential infrastructure including sewage treatment systems and terminal access roads.
Japan funded the airport’s international terminal 35 years ago. Officials said the new investment continues that partnership and aims to improve passenger facilities, safety, and operational standards.
