Nuku‘alofa – The Australian Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite, is visiting the Pacific this week as part of Australia’s efforts to strengthen regional partnerships. The official delegation will visit three countries: the Republic of Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga, and the Republic of Vanuatu.

Fiji will be the first stop, followed by Tonga, before the delegation concludes its visit in Port Vila.

During the visit to Tonga, Hon. Thistlethwaite is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and His Majesty’s Armed Forces, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala.

These high-level meetings will focus on deepening the close partnership between Tonga and Australia, with a particular emphasis on shared priorities under the Pacific Islands Forum, which Tonga currently chairs.

Australia continues to position itself as a committed and respectful partner in the region, with this visit reaffirming the importance of unity, cooperation, and mutual development among Pacific nations.

The visit is expected to highlight key areas of collaboration, including trade, development, climate resilience, and regional security, as Tonga and Australia work together to build a stable and prosperous Pacific future.
