Junior Ikale Tahi Prepares to Take on Regional Rivals in New Zealand
The Junior Ikale Tahi is gearing up to compete in a new under 20’s Rugby Competition hosted by Moana Pasifika. The games will be held at North Harbour, Auckland, with matches set to take place on next Tuesday February 27, March 2 and 6.
This year’s competition promises some physical encounters as Tonga joins the ranks alongside Samoa, Fiji, and a Moana Pasifika invitational team. Before embarking on their journey to New Zealand, the team met with Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku for some photos and words of encouragement.
Launched by Oceania Rugby and Moana Pasifika, this competition holds a crucial role in reinvigorating the U20s pathway programs across the Pacific region. Not only will it be a platform for intense rugby action, but it will also serve as a qualifier for Samoa and Tonga for the prestigious 2024 World Rugby U20s Trophy, scheduled to take place in Scotland from July 2 to July 17.
Speaking on behalf of Tonga Rugby Union, CEO ‘Aisea ‘Aholelei emphasized the significance of this tournament in identifying and nurturing the best talents. “Our main objective is to identify the best development systems to help our talent reach their full potential, and this tournament will greatly benefit our future growth plans and programs,” said ‘Aholelei.
