Digicel Claims Speed Crown as Tonga’s Fastest Mobile Network
Digicel Tonga has taken the speed title.
The telecom provider has been officially named the Fastest Mobile Network in Tonga by global network intelligence firm Ookla, the company behind the widely used Speedtest platform.
The award is based on real-world user data collected across the country during the second half of the assessment period, reflecting actual customer experience rather than laboratory testing.
It places Digicel at the forefront of Tonga’s competitive telecom market at a time when demand for mobile data is surging.
Digicel Tonga CEO Christopher Manaog said the recognition was a proud moment for the company and its staff.
“This Fastest Mobile Network award reflects our commitment to delivering a premium digital experience to our customers, whether they are in the capital or the outer islands,” he said. “I would also like to thank our hardworking team who have worked tirelessly to bring a premium network to the people of Tonga.”
Ookla President and CEO Stephen Bye said the award underscores Digicel’s performance in speed and reliability.
“Winning a Speedtest Award is a testament to dedication and innovation in the telecommunications industry,” he said.
What Faster Speeds Mean for Tonga
For consumers, the impact is immediate. Clearer video calls with family overseas. Smoother streaming. Faster downloads. More responsive online gaming.
For students, it means more stable access to virtual classrooms and global research platforms — particularly important for outer island communities where connectivity has historically lagged.
For businesses and content creators, higher bandwidth can translate into faster uploads, improved collaboration and greater productivity in an economy that is steadily digitising.
Mobile data use in Tonga has climbed sharply in recent years, driven by social media, streaming services and cross-border communication with the Tongan diaspora. As usage grows, network performance is becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
Digicel says it will continue investing in infrastructure to strengthen nationwide coverage and performance.
With competition intensifying in the sector, the ultimate beneficiaries of the speed race may be consumers, who stand to gain from better service, stronger connectivity and continued technological investment across the Kingdom.
