Toutai Kefu Bids Farewell as Tonga’s Rugby Coach After Rugby World Cup
After leading the Ikale Tahi since 2016, Toutai Kefu has announced that his tenure as Tonga’s coach will come to a close following their final pool match against Romania in the Rugby World Cup. Tonga, unfortunately, found themselves eliminated from the tournament after facing consecutive defeats from Ireland, South Africa, and Scotland – three of the top five nations in the rugby world. Despite their early exit, Tonga is determined to exit the competition on a high note by securing a victory over Romania.
Before the tournament commenced, the Ikale Tahi team held high hopes of springing some surprises, boasting a roster filled with prominent players who had switched allegiances from the Wallabies and the All Blacks to represent their ancestral nation. Among those with great optimism was Toutai Kefu himself. Regrettably, the tournament did not unfold as expected for him and his squad, leading him to conclude that the time has come for a new coach to take the reins and guide Tonga’s rugby future.
