Teen Sensation Alex Vakasiuola wins Gold for Tonga

After 9 days of competition with 6 more to go, Tonga has secured 1 Gold, 3 Silver, and 6 Bronze medals. Tonga’s previous highest medal tally was at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa, where the team claimed 9 Gold, 5 Silver, and 15 Bronze medals. The remaining sports left over the next six days are Athletics, Soccer, Netball, and Tennis.

Tonga’s lone gold medal so far was clinched by the 16-year-old sensation, Alex Vakasiuola. She emerged victorious in the women’s singles event in her debut appearance at the Pacific Games, shooting 73, 76, 69, and 73 on the final day to finish with a total of 291 after four days. This impressive performance put her 10 shots ahead of her nearest rival, Pricilla Grace Lormand, who scored 301.

“I just want to thank the people of Tonga for all their support. I feel great winning gold for my country,” she expressed to Pacific Games News.

A student at Arizona High School, Alex initiated her golf journey at the age of 6. She displayed remarkable composure over the four days of competition, holding off her rivals to claim the top honours.

Alex’s achievement stands out as the bright spot in what has so far been a disappointing showing by Team Tonga in Honiara.

Tonga’s 3 Silver Medals were earned in Women’s Rugby League 9’s (their first appearance at the Pacific Games), Uaealesi Funaki in WEIGHTLIFTING 96kgs – Clean & Jerk, and in ARCHERY mix team event.

The 6 Bronze medals so far have been secured by JUDO – Yasmin Aho 90kgs-100kgs, Sailosi Ealelei – Heavy Weight 100kgs+, Archery – Ane Fifita x 2 (Match Play & Single), Mixed Team, and Rugby Union Men’s 7’s. Medals standings https://bit.ly/3RhEVlm
