The Legislative Assembly Mourns the Passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga joins in mourning following the sad news of the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili. The Princess, a trailblazer in Tongan politics and a prominent figure, passed away on May 28, 2023, in Auckland, New Zealand.

Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu was the eldest daughter of Prince Fatafehi Tu’ipelehake and Melenaite Tupoumoheofo Veikune. Prince Fatafehi Tu’ipelehake was the younger brother of the late Taufa’ahau Tupou IV.

Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili created history as the first woman to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga. Serving as a People’s Representative of Tongatapu from 1975 to 1978, she shattered gender barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in politics.

Although she left formal politics, Her Royal Highness remained closely connected to the Legislative Assembly of Tonga. She generously offered her guidance and support to successive Tonga Youth and Girls’ Parliaments, demonstrating her commitment to empowering the young generation. In 2014, she inaugurated the Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Partnership Forum in Nuku’alofa, inspiring women not only in Tonga but across the Pacific region to actively participate in the political arena.

Today, the Legislative Assembly of Tonga gathers to pay tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili. Her ground-breaking achievements and unwavering determination have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. Tonga has lost a great leader and one of its most influential figures.
