Why has it taken over 12 months for Parliament to act? Mr. Panuve, the Chairman of Tonga Power, told Tonga Independent.

“It is great news from Parliament that we can openly discuss the ongoing concerns regarding the status of Tonga Power. I’m just waiting for someone from the committee to contact me to begin discussions,” Mr. Panuve said.

Tonga Independent had previously reported that the chairman, Mr. Panuve, supported the call for a Royal Commission as he expressed concerns and disappointment with senior management at Tonga Power. He stated that it was the best solution for everyone and that there were individuals within the organization who opposed transparency and contributed to a toxic working environment.

In a recent parliament sitting, Tongatapu2 Representative Hon. Dr. Uhila Fasi tabled a motion seeking permission for a parliamentary committee to gather information and investigate the reasons for the ongoing problems and the continued price rises in electricity. The motion was co-signed by Tongatapu 4 – Hon. Mateni Tapueluelu, Tongatapu 5 – Hon. Dr. Aisake Eke, and Eua 11 – Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi.

The committee will comprise two representatives from the Nobles, two from Cabinet, and two from the people’s representatives.

In his speech to the members, Hon. Fasi stressed the importance of the cost of power to the community and the ongoing public outcry that cannot be ignored any longer. He also stated that all avenues had been explored without a satisfactory outcome to the continuing issues at Tonga Power, and now it is time for Parliament to act.

The prime minister expressed concern about the issues at Tonga Power because the parties concerned were not present to reply to the allegations. However, he supports the motion.
