Fiji Ministry of Health & Medical Services Welcomes WHO Regional Director Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala
In a traditional Fijian ceremony this morning, the Ministry of Health & Medical Services extended a warm welcome to Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific. After ten weeks in his role, Dr Piukala chose Fiji as his first stop, a country he considers a second home due to his medical
education here.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Minister for Health & Medical Services Hon. Dr Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu, Permanent Secretary Dr Jemesa Tudravu, and all Heads of Department. Dr Piukala was joined by the Director of Pacific Technical Support and WHO Representative to the South Pacific, Dr Mark Jacobs.
During their discussions, the pressing health concerns of Fiji took centre stage. Dr Piukala and Minister Lalabalavu discussed the rising rates of HIV/AIDS, the battle against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), and the challenge of retaining healthcare professionals within the country.
Reflecting on his return to Fiji, Dr Piukala expressed his pleasure at being back, citing fond memories from his time in medical school. His deep connection to the country adds a personal touch to his commitment to improving health outcomes in the Pacific region.
Minister Lalabalavu emphasized that these issues are at the forefront of Fiji’s health sector’s agenda, highlighting the urgency with which they are approaching these challenges. The increase in HIV/AIDS cases demands a concerted effort, as does the battle against NCDs, which pose a significant threat to public health. Additionally, the retention of skilled healthcare workers is crucial for providing quality care to the population.
As Dr Piukala continues his journey as WHO Regional Director, his visit to Fiji marks a significant moment for collaboration and focused efforts towards a healthier Pacific.
