These pillars of justice, along with prosecution and courts, form the backbone of Tonga’s commitment to maintaining order and combating criminal activities.

The Tonga Police, known for their role in preventing and detecting law breaches, and HM Prisons, tasked with detaining offenders to prevent further crimes, are embarking on a joint mission. Under the banner #WorkingTogetherForADrugFreeTonga, a noteworthy meeting took place on January 31, 2024, between Commissioner of Prisons, Semisi Tapueluelu, and Tonga Police Commissioner, Shane McLennan. This assembly aimed to chart the future of interagency cooperation to fortify the nation’s fight against illicit drug trafficking and other criminal enterprises.

A focal point of their discussion was the integration of training programs and operational collaborations, particularly highlighting the synergy between the Tonga Police’s Detector Dog Unit and the prison’s security and custodial efforts. This initiative seeks not only to enhance the skills and knowledge of both forces but also to signify a united front against crime, demonstrated symbolically through the hoisting of Tonga Police’s flag at Hu’atolitoli Prison.

The renewed cooperation includes shared training courses for new recruits, who will now receive their initial training under the auspices of Tonga Police, underscoring the similar nature of skills required in both policing and corrections.
