The match showcased the young Japanese players’ skill and determination from the very beginning.
Japan XV set a brisk pace, scoring a try within the first two minutes. Kotaro Okawa’s dynamic break through Tonga A’s defense led to a well-executed pass to winger Yoshitaka Yazaki, who completed the move with finesse.
Tonga A faced early challenges in finding their rhythm, while Japan XV maintained control for the initial 30 minutes.
Despite an injury to their hooker Kalisitiane Fiva, Tonga A showed resilience as Brandon Televave stepped up to fill the gap effectively.
Even with the loss of their captain Yoshiaki Taian within the first 20 minutes, Japan’s resolve remained strong.
Left-wing Khaki Ebisawa scored two tries, and inside centre Takaya Mothashi added another, all before the 30-minute mark.
The heat proved challenging for both teams, yet they persevered with equal determination. Tonga A found their breakthrough after 30 minutes, with centre Lamipeti To’osavili Havea capitalizing on scrum-half Feleti Inoke’s quick tap.

Although fly-half Patelesio missed the conversion, the try sparked a surge of motivation.
A subsequent scrum near Japan’s five-meter mark allowed number eight Joseph Petelo Tongia to score, bringing the halftime score to 31-15 in Japan XV’s favour.
Tonga A began the second half with a formidable defensive effort led by forwards Edward Malcolm Whyte and Joseph Petelo Tongia.
However, Japan XV soon broke through, with replacement forward Mutsuki Urade initiating a quick tap that led to a try from Asahi Doei.
Despite their best efforts, Tonga A was unable to score in the second half. Japan XV’s relentless drive culminated in two final tries by replacement hooker Kenji Sato, who powered through Tonga A’s defense.
In the end, Japan XV’s outstanding performance secured their title as the 2024 Pacific Rugby Challenge champions.
This victory reflects the hard work and dedication of the young Japanese squad, who have set a high standard for future tournaments.
