Prime Minister in Emergency Meeting to Address Flash Flooding – NDRMC
The Prime Minister and Acting Minister for MEIDECC, Hon Hu’akavameiliku, took charge of the National Disaster Risk Management Committee (NDRMC) emergency meeting held at the National Disaster Risk Management Office today, Sunday 17th of March 2024. The focus of the meeting was to address the pressing issue of ongoing flash floods affecting various parts of the Kingdom.
With the situation continuing to evolve, two Interagency assessment teams have been deployed to conduct preliminary damage assessments. The teams are tasked with evaluating the extent of the damage caused by the floods, identifying affected areas, understanding the impacts on communities, and specifying the required actions to mitigate further risks.
During the meeting, updates on the current flood situation were shared, alongside weather forecasts provided by Tonga’s Tonga Meteorological Services. The first situation report (Sitrep) from the Joint Rapid Assessment was also presented, highlighting critical details crucial for response efforts.
The initial assessment revealed significant impacts on various areas, outlining the necessary resources needed in the event of conditions worsening. Discussions within the NDRMC centred on the detailed damage assessments initiated by the National Disaster Risk Management Office. These assessments provided valuable insights into the affected regions, causes of the flooding, impacts on communities, required actions, and necessary resources for potential escalations in the situation.
In light of these developments, the NDRMC has issued a public advisory, urging caution when driving through inundated roads. It’s important to note that the ripples created by vehicles passing through these flooded areas can enter homes situated alongside these roads. The committee emphasized the need for public awareness and safety precautions.
Tonga Meteorological Services has issued heavy rain and flood warnings for several regions including Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Vava’u, and Ha’apai. These warnings are effective from today Sunday through to Thursday next week. Residents in these affected areas are advised to stay informed of updates and take necessary precautions.
In case of urgent evacuation needs, residents are encouraged to contact Tonga Fire & Emergency Services at 999 or Tonga Police at 922.
