Nomination Period for Tonga’s Prime Minister Designate Opens
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua, has officially invited Elected Representatives to submit nominations for the position of Prime Minister Designate. This follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku (Siaosi ‘Ofa ki Vahafolau Sovaleni) on December 9, 2024.
Nominations must be submitted to the Speaker’s Office by 4:30 PM on Monday, December 23, 2024. Lord Fakafanua has reminded Representatives of the need for strict adherence to constitutional procedures, noting that nominations failing to meet legal standards could be invalidated.
On December 24, 2024, the Speaker will announce the nominations during the meeting of the Legislative Assembly before Representatives proceed to elect the new Prime Minister Designate.
