One of Tonga’s most consequential and historic Prime Ministers, the Reverend Doctor Pohiva Tuionetoa has passed away Sunday 19 March 2023 in San Francisco. Tuionetoa, Member of Parliament and Representative for his Tongatapu 10 constituency was on leave for medical treatment at the time.
Born in 1951, Tuionetoa is survived by his wife and family and loved ones.
In only 2 years, Tuionetoa oversaw a silent revolution in political culture through his departure from the then undisputed PTOA and a resurgence of monarchical sentiments.
He also presided over the biggest overhaul of infrastructure and social development in decades for Tonga.
He will be remembered by all, missed by many, and mourned by family and friends.
