New Tongan Police Commissioner Hopes to Tackle Drug Crisis, Especially Methamphetamine

Tonga has appointed a new Police Commissioner, Mr Geoff Turner, following the conclusion of Commissioner Shane McLennan’s three-year term. Commissioner-Designate Turner, a seasoned law enforcement officer from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), brings decades of experience in organised crime, drug enforcement, and international policing.
With a strong background in combatting drug syndicates — including time with the Vietnamese Drug and Gang Squad in Sydney and leadership roles in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism — Turner’s appointment is seen as a critical step in strengthening Tonga’s fight against the rising tide of drug-related issues, particularly the spread of methamphetamine (commonly known as “ice”).
His swearing-in ceremony is set for 12 May 2025, and there is renewed hope that his expertise will help steer Tonga towards stronger enforcement and community protection, at a time when drug use continues to pose a serious threat to public health and safety.
