Dr. Aisake Valu Eke has arrived in Washington, D.C. to lead Tonga’s delegation at the 2025 World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings, held from 13 to 18 October 2025. His participation underscores Tonga’s commitment to ensuring that the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) remain central in global economic and development policy discussions.

Dr. Eke was received at Washington National Airport by H.E. Mr. Viliami Va‘inga Tone, Tonga’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to the United States. Joining the Prime Minister are senior officials, including Ms. Kilisitina Tuaimei‘api, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance; Ms. Lesieli Tufui Faletau, Deputy CEO of the Ministry of Finance; and Mr. Tatafu Moeaki, Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga.

The Annual Meetings gather heads of government, finance ministers, and central bank governors from across the world to deliberate on global economic developments, financial stability, and sustainable growth strategies. For Tonga, the event offers an important platform to strengthen cooperation with international financial institutions and advocate for policies that support economic resilience, climate adaptation, and inclusive development across the Pacific.

Dr. Eke’s engagement reflects Tonga’s broader strategy to align its national priorities with global development frameworks, ensuring that small island economies are not left behind in the pursuit of sustainable growth and fiscal stability.
