Dr. Siale Akauola Appointed as New Health Minister
His Majesty King Tupou VI has officially appointed Dr. Siale ‘Akau’ola as the new Minister for Health. This strategic move, effective from January 27, 2024, comes following the departure of Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, who stepped down to embrace his new role as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Western Pacific in Manila, Philippines.
The appointment of Dr. ‘Akau’ola was recommended by Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku and aligns with Clause 51(2) of the Tongan Constitution. Dr. ‘Akau’ola, a respected figure with deep roots in Pahu, Kanokupolu, and Kolomotu’a, brings an extensive background in healthcare and governance to the table.
With a professional journey that spans over 37 years in the Tongan Ministry of Health, Dr. ‘Akau’ola is no stranger to the intricacies of healthcare management within the government. His career began in 1986 when he joined the public service as a Medical Officer, following his graduation from the University of Papua New Guinea with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Over the years, he has ascended through various senior management roles, showcasing his capabilities and commitment to public health.
Dr. ‘Akau’ola’s significant contributions include positions as Medical Officer Special Grade, Senior Medical Officer, and Medical Superintendent. His expertise was further enhanced with additional studies in Clinical Pathology. In 2009, his leadership qualities were recognized with his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer for Health by the Public Service Commission, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in May 2023.
