Preparations in Full Swing for Global Climate Conference in the United Arab Emirates

Tonga’s delegation convened at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre for a crucial meeting in anticipation of the upcoming COP28, the Conference of the Parties organized by the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change. The event, hosted by the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change (MEIDECC), was spearheaded by CEO Mr. Sione ‘Akau’ola. The gathering aimed to assess global climate progress since COP27 and strategize for COP28, scheduled to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12.

In his opening remarks, CEO Mr. Sione ‘Akau’ola underlined the significance of collective responsibility, stating, “Every one of us in this room and beyond these walls has a significant role to play in each of your organizations to contribute to Tonga’s resilience.” The event served as a platform for delegates to delve into decisions and outcomes from the June SB58 inter-sessional meetings, evaluate achievements post COP27, and formulate crucial strategies for the success of COP28.

Ms. Luisa Tuiafitu Malolo, Director of MEIDECC, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing global climate challenges. She asserted, “Today’s discussions have set the stage for a united front in tackling climate issues. Tonga stands ready to contribute actively to COP28, working towards sustainable solutions for the benefit of our Kingdom.”

Highlighting the need for integrated measures across sectors, climate change consultant Mr. Lano Fonua expressed the significance of the Pre COP28 Meeting. “It was a great opportunity to build the confidence of stakeholders from different ministries. It’s also important for Tonga because we are a country mostly made up of oceans.”

The event introduced preparatory measures for COP28, including the distribution of supporting documents and the initiation of Thematic Areas Registration. Delegates were encouraged to promptly complete the registration process, contributing to meticulous planning for the upcoming conference.

COP28, a global gathering of nations to address climate change, is set to be a critical event, with Tonga actively participating in the pursuit of sustainable solutions. As the delegation wraps up its preparations, the world will be watching as leaders convene in Dubai to tackle the pressing challenges of our changing climate.
