Hinemoana II: A New Dawn for Tonga and its Whales

Tonga has ushered in a new era of maritime exploration and conservation with the triumphant arrival of the Hinemoana II vaka moana in Tongatapu. After a demanding 10-day voyage through challenging sea conditions, this meticulously restored vessel safely completed its journey.
The over 1,200 nautical mile voyage, including the perilous passage through the Kermadec Islands, tested the limits of the all-female crew and vessel alike. Led by the unwavering leadership of Captains Aunofo Havea (Tonga), Fani Bruun (Samoa), and Joelene Busby (Aotearoa), the crew demonstrated exceptional courage and skill.

“The Hinemoana II is more than just a vessel. She is a symbol of our connection to the past, our commitment to the present, and our hope for the future,” said Havea, Tonga’s first female licensed sea captain. “When we voyage, we reconnect with our ancestral knowledge and inspire a new generation of ocean stewards,” she added.
Bringing the Hinemoana II home is a dream realized for Havea, founder of the Tonga Voyaging Society. The Society’s six-month restoration transformed the vaka into a state-of-the-art vessel, blending ancient wisdom with modern technology. A powerful symbol of unity, the Hinemoana II is a collaborative partnership between the Society and Te Whānau a Apanui, a Māori iwi.

Based in Vava’u, the Hinemoana II will serve as a platform for whale conservation, retracing their migration routes while nurturing a new generation of voyagers. By forging a maritime bridge between Tonga and Aotearoa, the vaka will not only facilitate cultural exchange but also deepen the shared commitment to ocean stewardship.
With support from Conservation International Aotearoa, Te Whānau a Apanui, Rolex, Gary Wipfler, and the Shriram Foundation, the Hinemoana II embodies hope for ocean conservation.
“She is more than just a vessel, she is a catalyst for change, a beacon for our people, and an enduring testament to our connection to the moana,” said Busby, Aotearoa’s first female Māori Captain.
“The ripples she creates will inspire generations to embrace the ocean,” added Bruun, Samoa’s first female yacht master who was instrumental in overseeing the restoration of Hinemoana II with Havea.
